Uganda, known as the "Pearl of Africa", has 10 national parks which cover very different landscapes, and, of course, a wide variety of flora and fauna. For this reason, Uganda stands out with more than 1,000 different bird species, of which several are endemic and represent more than 50% of all bird species in Africa. There are also 13 different species of primates living here, including chimpanzees, and more than 50% of the world's mountain gorillas. Ecotourism plays an important role in Uganda's economy, since it represents an important part of the country's income. In the Queen Elizabeth National Park, a new type of ecotourism is taking shape: wildlife research trips, where visitors can join researchers and collect animal data.

Wild animal meat represents a serious problem in Africa, most of all because it is very cheap. This has resulted in a large decline in wildlife in the last four decades, especially in national parks.
In the Murchison National Park in particular, high levels of wild animal meat consumption have been observed.

The illegal trade of animals and animal parts is also affecting the country's fauna, with thousands of tons of animals, alive and dead, that are sold or shipped worldwide every year. One of the most sought-after products is ivory, which is seriously endangering the survival of elephants and is completely illegal.
