Nigeria has 5 national parks. Gashaka-Gumti National Park is the largest one and covers more than 6,000 square kilometers. It is also home to a great number of wild animals, including many species in danger of extinction. Strict vigilance for poachers is carried out here, as well as for the welfare of the animals.
Kainji National Park is situated in Kwara state and was established in 1979. It includes two animal reserves called Zurugama and Borgu. Rio Cross National Park is famous among tourists from around the world as one of the few tropical forest areas left in Africa. Here, a large number of tourists visit the park to see gorillas, leopards, white-faced monkeys, buffalos and wild elephants.

For almost a century, local populations have hunted wild animals for food and this has led to a depletion of resources. Researchers estimate that almost half a million tons of wild animal meat is consumed in Nigeria every year. The danger is that many species, and particularly large mammals with low reproduction rates, may become extinct in the coming decades.

Nigeria has received a large amount of critics because of the poor conditions of zoos across the country. The government-owned zoo within Benue State University has been subject to further criticism due to the conditions in which its animals are housed, the lack of veterinary attention and the fact that there have been cases of animals which were left to starve to death.

The hyena men of Nigeria – who became known worldwide for the stunning images of photographer Pieter Hugo - belong to the same family who organizes a traveling show in the streets of different locations and displays - according to the latest testimonies - three hyenas, four baboons and two rock pythons.
These animals have been captured from the wild and "trained" for months through the use of drugs and violence. As you can see during their performances, they are tied to heavy chains and wear muzzles. In addition to using these animals to raise money with shows, Hyena men sell them to various zoos and pseudo-zoos in the country. In order not to encourage capture and animal abuse tourists should not attend or pay for these shows.
