Jordan offers a wide range of natural areas and nature reserves, such as Mujib near the Dead Sea, which offers shelter mainly to a wide variety of birds. Migratory birds also usually stop at Azraq, an oasis within the eastern desert. On the other side, the Shawmari Reserve was created as a refuge for endangered wildlife and now has oryx, ostriches and gazelles.

There are approximately 1,350 horses and donkeys around Petra, with 700 of them working regularly in the Archaeological Park.
In these ruins, tourists have the possibility to move between the several most important archaeological sites on the back of a donkey or a horse. Most of these animals are in a very poor physical condition and are forced to work for hours, climbing hard-to-reach areas while carrying one or more tourists.
It is advisable not to use this means of transport or, in case you want to do so, hire the services of those people who seem to have the animals in acceptable conditions and who care to treat them decently.
