Kaunas Zoo

Kaunas Zoo is the only official zoo in Lithuania and it does not fulfill neither the minimal requirements of the EU, neither national wildlife protection laws. The main issues of concern have to do with the welfare of the animals and their "accommodation", since several of the cages are not even locked with keys and expose people to potential and serious dangers.

Dzūkija National Park

Dzūkija National Park is the largest protected area in Lithuania and is located in the southern part of the country. Famous for its wild forests, mushrooms, berries, characteristic villages and the warmness of local people, it is also known as a bird paradise. The forest is home to many species, including the European roller, the European nightjar and the woodlark.

Dolphinariums

In this country you can also find centers which keep cetaceans (dolphins, killer whales or beluga whales) in captivity. Science has shown that these intelligent animals suffer greatly in the limiting conditions of dolphinariums and their stress levels and mortality rates are very high.

The training of these animals for circus shows where they perform totally unnatural behaviours, and which can harm them physically, is achieved through keeping the animals in a permanent state of hunger so that they act in exchange for a piece of dead fish.

Condemned by their facial structure, which resembles a human smile, these highly social animals, which would swim long distances and dive into great depths in the wild, are used to perform stunts in small concrete tanks. Many of these individuals are taken from the wild.
