Tourism and Pets - Ferry Travel with Pets

Ferry Travel with Pets

There are no specific guidelines in Spain on the transport of pets by passenger ferry. Each company therefore decides its own conditions.

Generally speaking, the following minimum rules usually apply:

  • The animal’s owner will have to carry their valid passport or health card. If there are any anomalies on the certificate, the animal will not be allowed to travel.
  • Depending on the company, the type of ferry and the journey, animals may have to remain in the family vehicle for the duration of the trip or they may be able to travel in specific areas of the ferry, usually in the deck area or cargo areas.
  • For animals traveling in deck areas, passengers can arrange to visit their pets by contacting the ferry information office before the trip.
  • It is highly recommended to book in advance and state that you will be traveling with a pet.
  • The animal transport fee varies depending on the company and maintenance costs for animals during the trip will be covered by their owner.
  • Dogs traveling in the hold must wear a lead and muzzle both when boarding and disembarking. All other animals will have to travel in a carrier.

Some shipping companies allow you to book trips with special walking areas and others set limits according to the species of animal. In addition to the European regulations, you must always check the conditions of the chosen company.
