Hawksbill sea turtles

The largest population of hawksbill sea turtles remaining in the Indian Ocean belongs to the Seychelles, where approximately between 1,230 and 1,740 females nested each year in the 1980s. However, populations had been declining due to illegal collection of eggs and turtle poaching until 1994, the year in which a total legal ban on taking eggs and turtles was implemented. We advise tourists to always make sure they are not buying products or souvenirs made from turtle parts.

Poaching still remains a problem in the Seychelles, although currently there is a greater legal awareness and protection at the national level.
